Custom Miata Cold Air/Cowl Intake|
The rest of the plumbing is 3 inch exhaust pipe. The bend is a 90 degree madrel bend pipe with a 6 inch radius bend. A sharper bend would be nice, but good luck finding one in this size. I bought the 90 dgree bend at my local hotrod shop (thanks Don's Hotrod Shop in Tucson) but any exhaust shop worth it's salt should be able to sell you one for cheap. JC Whitney also sells them.
I tried to polish the pipe up, but since it's just plain old steel it would have been more trouble than I am willing to shell out. I might paint the whole deal neon blue or something in the future, but don't count on it.
I also purchased this exhaust pipe connector/junction/coupler/thingy at Auto Zone for $1.50.
I flattened one end to better fit the available space in my firewall. This gave me just the right amount of extra length to reach the firewall and gave me a cheaper piece of metal to flatten out than the big pipe. I just pounded it flat on one end with a heavy sledge hammer until it looked right.
The most important things about the plumbing are; 1) Clearing the hood when closed, and 2) Not pressing against the clutch reservoir when in place. The last thing you need is you cluth failing because your super-cool intake is pressing against the clutch reservoir. Also big dents in your hood stink too.
The metal hose at top right is for the clutch and can be unclipped and bent down without damaging it. Just be vary careful not to crimp or otherwise damage the line!!! In the end, I didn't really have to move it that much, which made me feel better about it. Here you can see the clutch line. The arrows point out the hole it was originally clipped into and the line itself going into the reservoir:
With the intake in place:
