Custom Miata Cold Air/Cowl Intake Page 5 I cut a hole roughly the shape of the flattened out part of the intake in my firewall using cutoff wheels on my Dremel. I used up two wheels and once again it made an aweful racket. Not to mention leaving a bunch of dust and metal filings in the cowl and engine compartment. I didn't take any pictures because I'm lazy and because it's hard to hold a camera and cut metal at the same time. Here you can see the hole in the firewall. There is a good 2 to 3 inches of clearance from the bottom of the rain channel so water shouldn't be an issue unless I drive underwater. ![]() Here you can see that I deliberatly positioned the intake hole on the can opposite one of the original handles on the paint can. This allows the handle thing to provide a little buffer zone between the can and the exhaust heat shield. I don't know how much it helps keep the intake cool, but it can't hurt. ![]() I found that the can lid tends to resonate with the engine at certain RPMs. The result of this is the sound like something annoying buzzing inside an empty paint can. Go figure. The fix was to epoxy a steel rod to the inside of the lid. This reinforced the lid so that it doesn't vibrate. A quick spray with some Dynomat or underbody coating might accomplish the same thing if you have it on hand.
