Custom Miata Cold Air/Cowl Intake|
Next up is the plumbing. It turns out that an empty one gallon paint can from Ace hardware is just the right size to house the filter. I cut the bottom off with a can opener, leaving the lid part available for *whatever* in case I ever feel the need to use it. I will probably end up using it to attach a mounting bracket.
Before cutting anything I test fitted the can and the pipes in the car. I just gave myself a genral idea of where I would need holes cut and how long the pipes would need to be.
Here is the paint can, with a big hole cut in the side for input.
I cut the hole using a Dremel. If you do this, do youself and loved ones a favor and also buy some ear plugs. I swear on my father's grave that cutting into this was the loudest noise ever heard my man. The can acts like the sounding board on a guitar or violin and amplifies all the shreading metal sounds the Dremel makes. I'm sure that if I hadn't worn ear plugs that I would have lost some hearing.
Another must is eye protection. With all the bits of flying metal and cut-off wheel in the air you'll definitely catch one if you're not wearing goggles.
The rubber gasket in the small hole is an old washer fluid hose that I slit one side of and fit around the edge of the hole. This allows for some irregular edges in the hole. Besides this doesn't need to be a perfect, air-tight seal.
What you can barely see in the picture is the rubber bead I put in the bottom of the can to hold the base of the filter in tightly. I used blue RTV silicon gasket maker. Basically I just squeezed a bead out all the way around the inside edge of the can. I ended up having to cut the height of the bead in half with a knife to get the filter in, but in the end the filter fits perfectly and the silicon rubber holds onto it tightly.
